Intro to DMX

with Brandon Davis
Lightscape Lab – Tech Training Series

You do not need set experience to take this class.

If you’ve never worked a day on a film set…
If you’ve never plugged in a moving light…
If you’ve heard the term “DMX” and thought, “I have no idea what that means”…

This class was built for you.

What Is This Class?

Intro to DMX is a beginner-friendly, hands-on course that teaches the fundamental language of modern lighting control.

DMX is the communication protocol that allows lighting consoles to control fixtures — on film sets, in theaters, at concerts, in churches, and in installations. If lights move, change color, dim smoothly, or pixel-map across a wall… DMX is usually involved.

What You’ll Learn (From the Ground Up)

We start at the beginning.

  • What DMX is (in plain language)

  • What a “channel” is

  • How fixtures get addressed

  • What universes are and why they matter

  • Modes and profiles

  • Lighting Networks 101

  • Wireless DMX

  • The tools professionals use (Swisson, DMXCat, CRMX Toolbox)

  • Console basics

  • Essential paperwork: drawings, labels, patch sheets

  • How different roles collaborate on set

You won’t just hear about it.
You’ll touch it. Build it. Break it. Fix it.

How the Class Works

Day 1 – Fundamentals

We lay the groundwork of the DMX network in a clear, beginner-friendly way.

You’ll get hands-on with real DMX tools and prepare a small lighting rig that we’ll use in the next phase.

No experience? Perfect. This is where you start.

Day 2 – Implementation

We review the fundamentals and move into real-world application.

You’ll build and troubleshoot a small, unmanaged network using the equipment prepared on Day 1 — simulating practical scenarios you’ll encounter in theatre and on set.

By the end of the lab, you’ll understand how data flows, how problems are solved, and how professionals think through a system.

About Brandon Davis

About Brandon Davis

Brandon Davis has been working with light since 1976, beginning in theatre electrics before transitioning into telecommunications and engineering, earning a BSEET and working in the dot-com era with Nortel Networks.

He returned to stage electrics and joined IATSE Local 479 in 2005, and has been a full-time GrandMA Lighting Control Programmer since 2010.

From 0–10v systems and fresnels to multi-universe wireless DMX and pixel-mapped LED, Brandon has worked through every major evolution of lighting control — and knows how to explain it clearly to both beginners and working professionals.

You’re learning from someone who’s seen it all — and still loves teaching what comes next.
